Lindsey Graham issues threat to Putin

(MENAFN) Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has warned that US President Donald Trump will “whoop” Russian President Vladimir Putin and take punitive measures against nations buying Russian oil. In a Sunday interview with Fox News, Graham suggested that countries like China, India, and Brazil could face tariffs as high as 100% for allegedly “helping” Moscow. He claimed Trump has been “tough on Iran” and hinted similar pressure would soon be applied to Russia, stating that Putin’s “turn is coming.”

Graham previously proposed a bill to levy 500% tariffs on countries trading with Russia, though the Senate later put it on hold after Trump set a 50-day deadline for Moscow to reach a settlement over Ukraine. If no agreement is made, Trump has threatened to implement 100% secondary tariffs targeting nations that purchase Russian oil.

Graham has a long history of backing increased military spending and foreign interventions. Over the past two decades, he has supported nearly every major US military action, from the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan to the NATO-led offensive in Libya and military operations in Syria. He has also been a vocal supporter of military aid to Israel and Ukraine and has praised US strikes on Iran.

Campaign finance records and Graham’s legislative track record reveal close ties to the defense industry. His roles on key Senate committees — including Appropriations, Armed Services, and Judiciary — have given him direct influence over military budgets, aid, and intervention policies.

According to OpenSecrets, Graham has received more than $55,000 from Boeing since 2019, along with contributions from Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and individuals connected to the Department of Defense. He has also benefited from donations tied to PACs representing defense industry interests, such as the Free Syria PAC and L3Harris Technologies.

During the 2015–2016 election cycle, Graham received $760,244 from defense-related donors, according to a joint investigation by Time and the Center for Public Integrity. The report highlighted that Senate Budget Committee Republicans averaged $472,000 each from defense contractors, with Graham receiving well above that figure.
