Half dozen people murdered in terrorist assault in Iran
The attack occurred when three armed assailants attempted to enter a courthouse disguised as civilians. After being stopped, they opened fire on police officers and courthouse staff, local officials told Mehr News. One of the attackers reportedly threw a grenade inside the building, causing multiple casualties before being shot dead.
The remaining two gunmen were killed in a gunfight outside the courthouse. All three were wearing suicide vests, the IRGC said.
The Sistan and Baluchestan province, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, is a volatile region home to Iran’s Baloch Sunni minority. The area frequently experiences violence involving Iranian security forces and armed separatist or jihadist groups.
Responsibility for the assault was claimed by the Baloch militant group Jaish al-Adl, which operates from both Iran and neighboring Pakistan. In a statement released before the attack, the group urged civilians to leave the area.
Earlier this year, Iran launched missile strikes on Jaish al-Adl’s base in southwestern Pakistan, following a suicide bombing that killed nearly a dozen Iranian police officers.
